Life Legacy
Robert (Bob) R. Harkness, 79, of Roscoe, IL passed away suddenly Friday October 7. Born in Chicago, IL and raised in Glencoe and Evanston. Attended Western Military Academy in Alton, Illinois. Friendships he made there lasted his whole life. Bob started college at Knox and went into the service during the Korean War attached to the Fleet Marine Force Pacific 3rd Marine Division. He then attended Northwestern University and went on to business with the airlines. Worked with United at O'Hare and then with BOAC, now British Airways. Married Pamela (Hanneman), the love of his life, in Waterloo, Iowa in 1969. They moved to Rockford, IL where Bob opened a specialty packaging business. Joined Telecom USA in the sales department, eventually becoming Branch Manager. After Telecom, Bob became the area manager for a couple of communication companies in Wisconsin. Retirement soon followed. After the death of his best friend of 40 years, wife, Pamela, Bob kept himself busy with reading to the students of Capron Elementary. It was one of his greatest joys. He loved “his kids.” He cared faithfully for his best buddy, Bodhi, taking him on paper runs every morning. He read books, cheered Northwestern and Bears football, and loved spending time with his family. He also spent many hours on his boat in Bellevue, Iowa. Bellevue was his favorite place in the world. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Shannon Harkness, Son-in-law, David Root, many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and countless neighbors, and friends that he held very dear to his heart. In Bob’s words:” I guess I'm one lucky old geezer!” In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family.
Memorial visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Julian-Poorman-Welte Funeral Home, 304 N. 5th st. Rockford, IL 61107.
